Do I Need Treatment?
Sometimes it is difficult to know whether or not you or a loved one needs drug or alcohol treatment.
The most important first step is admitting to yourself that there is a drug/alcohol problem. Until this occurs, treatment will not be successful.
Here are 8 questions you should ask yourself:
1. Do you drink or use drugs to relieve feelings of stress, sorrow, worry, or pain of any kind?
Often preceeded by work stress, family stress, disappoitment, feelings of guilt or regret, after a fight or argument.
2. Do you believe it is okay to use drugs or alcohol during specific time periods?
Often to celebrate an occassion or more frequently during specific times of the day when it is perceived to be okay. You may find yourself socializing more with people who regularly use drugs.
3. Do you use drugs or alcohol when you first wake up in the morning?
Often the rationalization is to get rid of the hangover by drinking or using again.
4. Have you caused problems or felt like you have caused problems due to alcohol or drug use?
This is noticeable through being in or causing accidents while intoxicated, becoming hospitalized from alcohol or drug use, or getting into legal trouble due to use.
5. Do you feel as though you are losing control of work/school?
This can be seen through poor performance, chronic tardiness, increased fear of losing your job or failing in school, and using alcohol or drugs while at work/school.
6. Have you noticed a change in the behavior of friends and/or family towards you?
Friends or family members may try to limit the time they spend around you due to alcohol or drug use.
7. When you use drugs to you reassure yourself that it is only to feel better about yourself?
Use of drugs and alcohol can often give you feelings of elation that are mistaken for self-esteem and confidence. 8. Do you drink or use drugs when you are alone?
There's nothing wrong with an occasional beer in the company of friends. But when you start to drink or use drugs when you're by yourself, you may have a drug problem.
